Dresden pipes and drums
pipeband
pipeband in dresden, upper saxony, germany
We, the Dresden Pipes & Drums, are a band that, in original Scottish uniform and with extraordinary instruments in this country, traditionally makes Scottish music.
We meet once a week in Dresden to rehearse.
The common hobby unites the most diverse age groups and professions with us. The members came to us out of different interests. Some of you have been enthusiastic about Scotland’s flair all their lives. Impressed by the Scottish events, such as the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, they wanted to learn this art themselves.
In Germany, the Scottish tradition is often combined with the German past, so that medieval markets, for example, are organized together with Scottish Highland Games. This is the way some members joined the band. Others of us have been playing an instrument for a long time and have switched to the Scottish bagpipe or drums because they fascinate the uniqueness and its sound.
In principle, we can be compared to a German Spielmannszug. With the difference that our wind instruments consist of the Scottish bagpipes and the drums of the typical Scottish snare drums, tenor drums and a bass drum. The Scottish pipebands have a military background and therefore, for example, marching is also part of pipe music. A band with several pipes and drums creates a volume of 122 dB.
